What is Core banking system?

A core banking system is the software at the centre of a financial institution. It holds the customer and account records, processes every deposit, withdrawal, transfer and loan repayment, and posts each one to the general ledger, so the institution always knows what it holds and what it owes.

What it should include

• Customers and KYC: customer records with identity checks such as BVN verification.
• Deposit products: savings and fixed deposit accounts, with interest calculated and posted by the system.
• Loans: loan types with flat-rate or reducing-balance interest, schedules and repayments.
• Tellers and cash: tills and a vault, each tracked as a cash account.
• General ledger: double-entry postings, a trial balance and financial statements from the same data.
• Controls: maker-checker approval, role-based access and a full audit trail.

Why it matters for a microfinance bank

Many smaller institutions still run on spreadsheets or a desktop package installed at one branch. Balances then live in different places, the ledger is reconciled by hand at month end, and field collections are keyed in days later.
