Moving from desktop banking software to the cloud: a migration playbook

What to extract, how to verify a trial migration, and how to run in parallel without losing a day of trading.

What to extract

  • Customers with account numbers, types, officers and opening balances
  • Running loans with schedules and repayments to date
  • The chart of accounts and GL balances as at the cut-over date
  • Optionally, the full ledger history

The trial migration

Run the import as a dry run first and review the exception list. Then load a trial and verify twenty customers end to end: balance, last five transactions, loan position. Only then load for real.

The parallel run

For three to five trading days, post in both systems and compare the day-end totals. Any difference is either a migration issue or a training issue; both are cheaper to find now than after go-live.

Cut-over

Pick a day-end, close the old system, load the final balances, and open the new one the next morning with the support team on call.
